Laura Shovan, MAT
Laura Shovan has over 20 years of experience as an educator and poet-in-the-schools. Laura holds a BFA from New York University and an MAT from Montclair State University in New Jersey, where she taught high school English. After moving to Maryland, Laura became an education writer for the Baltimore Sun’s Howard County bureau. She also covered education, families, and learning differences for Baltimore’s Child magazine. Laura has worked with twice-exceptional students as past Co-chair of the Howard County Public Schools’ Gifted and Talented Advisory Committee. She is an award-winning poet and co-editor of the anthology Voices Fly: Exercises and Poems from the Maryland State Arts Council Artist-in-Residence Program, for which she teaches. Laura’s first novel for children, The Last Fifth Grade of Emerson Elementary, will be published in April 2016 (Wendy Lamb Books/Random House).
